Your journey with United begins with our industry-leading Initial Training program, an intensive 6.5-week experience held in Houston, TX. Here, you will immerse yourself in United’s rigorous safety protocols and renowned service standards, equipping you with the expertise to excel. Upon successful completion of this comprehensive training and a subsequent base orientation, you will officially join United as a full-time employee. During your training, United provides a supportive stipend of $140 per week, along with comfortable dual-occupancy hotel accommodations, and two meals daily (breakfast and either lunch or dinner, depending on your training schedule).
Following your training, you will be assigned to one of our strategically located flight attendant bases, which may include our seven major hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Franciso, Washington Dulles, or other key locations. As a United Flight Attendant, you are the heart of our inflight experience, responsible for ensuring the highest levels of safety, comfort, and satisfaction for every passenger. This role demands a unique blend of professionalism, empathy, and adaptability. Your core proficiencies will include:
- Prioritizing and ensuring the highest levels of safety for all passengers and crew throughout every phase of flight.

With United’s extensive route network, our flight attendants are available for assignments 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours. You will fulfill reserve assignments on short notice and be prepared to be away from your base for several days at a time.

Requirements
To be a successful United Flight Attendant, you must meet the following stringent requirements:
- Be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college education are preferred.
- Have at least one year of customer service experience in a service-oriented industry, such as retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, or social services.
- Be able to speak in a clear, concise, and organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard effectively in an emergency situation. You must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.
- You must be able to read and speak Dutch fluently.
- Possess the ability to hear all types and ranges of sound, and effectively communicate even in high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather conditions, and turbulence.
- Maintain a professional appearance, adhere to excellent grooming standards, and be willing to follow United’s uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Specific guidelines include:
- Tattoos: Not permitted on the head, hands, or neck, including behind the ear. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted, but may not be larger than a credit card/employee badge (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) or must be covered with standard uniform pieces. All visible tattoos must not be offensive (this includes, but is not limited to, tattoos that are violent, obscene, sexual, racist, or contain objectionable content or any imagery that includes weapons).
- Dental Adornments: Decorative covers, adornments, and/or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Be able to proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) for the completion of required tasks.
- Possess a valid passport prior to application with at least 18 months of remaining validity. You must have current physical possession of a valid U.S. passport book or a foreign passport book with applicable visas and eligibility to travel globally without restrictions. Your passport book must be in good condition. Having applied for a passport or waiting for a renewed passport is not sufficient. You must be able to travel to and from all countries United serves without any restrictions, understanding that the destinations list is subject to change. As a United Flight Attendant, you must be able to enter and exit these locations as a working crew member, not as a passenger.
- Physical Capabilities: Be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bins or window exits), and push and pull beverage carts (up to 250 lbs.). You must also pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous), without shoes on, to operate all necessary equipment, machinery, and doors. You must be able to sit in an assigned jump seat with the seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Be required to serve and/or sell food and beverages in a diligent and professional manner.
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Be willing and able to work a flexible schedule in support of United’s 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Onboarding and Training Expectations:
- Water Evacuation Drill: Flight attendant trainees must successfully complete an evacuation drill in the water (pool) during training.
- Pre-Employment Screenings: Be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Drug Screenings: Be able to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. It is important to note that medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the Flight Attendant position.
- Background Check: Be able to pass a 10-year background check, including criminal background history. Your background must not prohibit travel to or from anywhere United flies. For example, Canada has strict inadmissibility classifications for DWI/DUI charges, including misdemeanors. If you have been on probation or convicted of a DWI/DUI within the last 10 years, the Canadian government may not allow you to travel to and from Canada unless you have already received a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) from the Canadian government.
- Medical Requirements: With or without reasonable accommodation, meet hearing and vision requirements as established by the Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines, including not having hearing loss on audiometry in the better ear greater than 40 dB when losses at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz are averaged; and, each eye must be 20/40 or better corrected for both far and near vision.
